Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Mathis was born in Celle (Germany) on May 13, 1950. He was first trained as a television service technician and then became an electrical engineer from the Fachhochschule Hannover. He received the Dipl.-Phys. degree in physic in 1980 and the Dr.-Ing. degree (Ph.D.) in electrical engineering in 1984, both from the Technical University of Braunschweig, He was granted the Habilitation degree from the University of Braunschweig in 1988 for "Network Theory and Computer Aided-Design". Since March 2001 he is corresponding member of the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften - Klasse für Ingenieur- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften.
He is now a full professor at the University of Hannover and holds the chair of the Electromagnetic Theory Group (TET). From 1985 to 1990 he was an assistant professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig. Between 1990 and 1996 he was a full professor at the University of Wuppertal. And from 1996 to 2000 he was a full professor at the University of Magdeburg. In 1990 he was a visiting researcher in the Lab of Prof. L.O. Chua at the University of California, Berkeley in USA and in 1995 he visited the Lab of Prof. Tadeusiewicz at the University of Lodz in Poland.
His research interests include theory of nonlinear circuits and dynamical systems, theory of nonlinear noisy networks and systems (incl. its thermodynamic theory), computer-aided circuit analysis and design, realization of nonlinear circuits (oscillators, PLL, power amplifiers incl. class-D), numerical mathematics, parallel computation, nanoelectronics, quantum computing, analysis and numerics of electromagnetic fields, computer algebra, and history of Electrical Engineering and Technical Physics. He has published three books and more than 150 papers in these areas. In 1999 he received the award "ITG-Preis" for the publication "A Thermodynamic Approach to Noise in Non-Linear Network" (together with his former Ph.D. Student Dr. Laurens Weiss) and in the same year the Best Paper Award of the International Journal of Circuit Theory and its Application for this paper.
In 1997 Dr. Mathis was elected in the reviewer group for electrical engineering of the German Research Society (DFG) and since 2000 he is the leader of this group.
Dr. Mathis is currently the chair of the group "Network Theory and Numerics" (ITG-FG 8.4.1) and the leader of the area "Integrated Systems" (ITG-FA 8.4) as well as leader of the ITG-FB 8 "Micro- and Nanoelectronics" of the German Electrical Engineering Society (VDE/ITG). Furthermore he is chair of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society German chapter since 2001.
He was the associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems from 1995 to 1997. He is a member of IEEE, VDE/ITG, DPG (German Physical Society). He has become an IEEE senior member since 1998 and he received the IEEE Fellow award in 1999. He has organized two national conferences in systems and network theory and in 1999 he was the general chairman of the ISTET conference - an international conference in network and field theory. Furthermore he is a member of the scientific committee of many national and international conferences (ECCTD, ISTET, MIXDES, IC-SPETO, ANALOG, ISSSE, TELSIKS, NDES, etc.).
He was married with Barbara Wessel-Mathis in 1985 and he has three children.
